How does the disc work, and is it safe?
The AllMatters Menstrual Disc is a reusable and comfortable alternative to single-use period products. It holds the equivalent of 6 tampons, offering you all-day or night protection. It lasts for years and is made from 100% soft medical grade silicone. The disc collects flow rather than absorbing it, and poses no risk of irritation or dryness when used as recommended. Because of its unique placement, the disc often feels less noticeable once inserted, offering up to 12 hours of leak-free protection.
Differences with the cup
- Shape & Position: While a cup sits in the vaginal canal, the disc is positioned higher up in the vaginal fornix. This is the widest part at the top of the vagina, surrounding the base of the cervix. Placed horizontally, the front rim of the disc should be tucked securely behind your pubic bone to stay in place. A cup is bell-shaped and sits lower in the vaginal canal, forming a suction seal.
- Removal: To remove a disc, you hook a finger under the front rim and pull it out. A cup, on the other hand, requires pinching the base to release the suction before removing it.
What to expect when switching
Switching to a menstrual disc is an exciting step toward sustainable and comfortable period care. If you’re new to the disc or transitioning from tampons, pads, or a cup, it’s helpful to know that adapting typically takes 1–3 menstrual cycles. Mastering the insertion, removal, and overall comfort is a learning process, and initial challenges like minor leaks or removal anxiety are completely normal.
- First Cycle: Expect to spend 5–10 minutes per insertion as you experiment with angles and positions. We recommend wearing period underwear or a liner during this time to reduce stress.
- Second Cycle: Insertion and removal will become much quicker, often taking just a minute or two as your "muscle memory" develops.
- Third Cycle: You’ll likely have your rhythm down for emptying (every 4–12 hours), cleaning, and reinserting with total confidence.
