Why does my cup leak or feel uncomfortable?
Leaking
There are several reasons a cup may leak, and here’s how to fix them:
- The air holes in the cup are clogged. The 4 small air holes help create suction. If they’re blocked, the cup may not seal properly. To clear the air holes, either use a small brush or fill your cup with warm water, cover the top with your palm, and squeeze the base until water flows through the holes, unblocking them.
- The cup didn't open fully. After inserting the cup, clench your pelvic floor muscles to help release it and create the suction seal. You can also pinch the cup's base, twist it back and forth, and run your finger along the bottom to check whether it has opened properly and has no folds or dents.
- The cup isn’t positioned correctly. Insert your cup at a 45-degree angle toward your spine, the natural shape of the vaginal canal. Place it a bit lower than a tampon. Your cervix may not be at the very top of the canal; it can shift or be angled differently throughout your cycle. Make sure the rim of the cup sits below your cervix to prevent leaks. You can locate your cervix by feeling for a slightly firmer area of tissue in your vagina.
- Excess blood is left in the vagina and around the cup. After insertion, run a finger along the edge of the cup to remove any remaining blood.
Discomfort
When inserted correctly, you shouldn't feel any discomfort with the cup. It may take some time for your body to adjust to it. However, if you're experiencing persistent discomfort, it usually comes down to one of these reasons:
- Your body is still getting used to the cup.
- Its positioning isn't optimal. Your cervix can change position throughout your cycle. You may need to adjust the cup higher or lower at a slight angle. If it has been inserted too high and placed beside your cervix instead of underneath, remove the cup and reinsert it correctly.
- You accidentally scratched yourself or irritated the inside of the vagina when inserting/removing it.
- The cup's stem is poking through the outside of your vagina. In this case, we recommend shortening the stem.
- The cup size is not right for you. If it doesn't unfold, you will likely feel it, which might cause discomfort and lead to cramping beyond normal period pain.
