Why does my period underwear leak?

There are a few factors that can affect absorbency. Here are the most common reasons why:

  • Absorbency Level: While our underwear is designed to be leak-proof, leaking can occur if the absorbent layers become saturated. This typically happens if your flow is heavier than the capacity of the model or if they are worn longer than recommended. Once the fabric reaches its maximum capacity, liquid may begin to seep through, usually at the seams. You might find that pairing the underwear with a menstrual cup or tampon provides that extra bit of protection for longer days.
  • Size & Fit: If the underwear does not fit snugly around the legs, liquid can bypass the absorbent pad entirely. If you’re experiencing "side leaks," you may need a smaller size, or you might have better luck with our Tencel model, which features elastic around the legs for a closer fit.
  • Washing Routine: How the underwear is washed can significantly affect performance over time. It is important to avoid fabric softener, as it coats the fibers and prevents them from absorbing. We also recommend avoiding bleach and detergents with enzymes, as these can break down the specialized fibers. Hang to dry.
  • Manufacturing Check: While it is very rare, a defect in the pad's stitching can occasionally prevent proper absorption. Check whether the issue arises with all your pairs or if it is just the one.
